Since its inception on May 3rd, 2012 in Kampala, Uganda, the East Africa Healthcare Federation (EAHF) has grown from the initial three founding members to seven-member country Federations/Associations. The Federation’s annual conferences in member states brings together health care stakeholders from all over the region and beyond. EAHF is presently formed by APHFTA- Tanzania Private Health Sector, Kenya Healthcare Federation (KHF), Uganda Healthcare Federation (UHF), Rwanda Healthcare Federation (RHF), Burundi Private Health Sector, the South Sudan Private Health Practitioners Association, Ethiopia Private Healthcare Federation, and the incoming DRC Congo Private Health Sector Association (In formation). EAHF unifies East Africa Private Healthcare Players at the East African Community level. Healthcare stakeholders from all the East African States meet at the EAHF Conference to discuss the latest healthcare business agenda, and explore the newest developments in healthcare delivery and technology.
Since the re-formation of the East African Community, the now seven member states have pushed the agenda on integration. The way forward is to form an East African Federation with greater coordination of the various sectors, notably in education, custom unions, and trade through the East African Community (EAC), as well as established regional bodies. Since its formation in 2012, the EAHF has established itself as the lead for healthcare services within the private health sector in the region. The federation provides a platform for sharing experience and dialogue among its members and with the regional governments at country and EAC level. Its a media for stimulating positive change in the health sector through a coordinated effort of all the member states at the same pace, without leaving any member state at a disadvantaged position. One of the federation’s mandates is to open regional and international healthcare markets for the EAC member states. The Federation is propelling the development of the health sector in each of the member states and in the whole of Eastern African Region.
The EAHF Conference provides a unique platform for health sector stakeholders to share ideas and advocate for their business agenda. This is in line with the spirit of the East African states integration, and with the East African policies. Public Private Partnerships in health have been adopted by the partner states as an important ingredient in the development of a sustainable health sector in the East African Region.
Medical tourism in East Africa has been growing steadily, with countries like Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda becoming popular destinations for individuals seeking healthcare services from neighboring countries and even abroad. These countries offer a range of medical treatments and procedures, including specialized surgeries, dental care, and wellness retreats, often at lower costs compared to Western countries. Patients may be referred to different countries within East Africa or beyond for specific treatments not available locally or for higher levels of care.
Thus, the 2024 EAHF Conference theme is Enhancing Cross Boarder Medical Referrals and Quality of Care in the East African Region.
For Hospitals in East Africa, the EAHF Conference is the place to showcase what they have to offer for the region. Renowned professionals from East Africa and beyond will participate. Scientific papers on health care policies and regulations will be presented and discussed. Regional healthcare experiences will also be shared. The conference will provide an opportunity for networking and strengthening partnerships in health. Business-to-business meetings with investors in healthcare will also feature at the Conference.
